Energy from Cotton Stalks and other Crop Residues
نویسندگان
چکیده
Energy is considered the basis for the progress and prosperity of nations and societies. Availability and consumption levels of energy is the best indicator of economic and social development. In many developing countries energy from crop residues (CR) has been the main source of energy, mostly in its traditional forms designed to meet the demands of domestic uses (Hall and Rosillo, 1998). In industrialized countries, the use of crop residues for energy production has been propagated as a substitute for fossil fuels. The limited availability of fossil fuels and the growing awareness of the detrimental environmental consequences resulting from greenhouse gas emissions have reinforced the importance of crop residues as an energy resource in developed and developing countries.

Anaerobic Biodegradability and Methane Potential of Crop Residue Co-Digested with Buffalo Dung
ABD (Anaerobic Biodegradability) and BMP (Biochemical Methane Potential) of banana plant waste, canola straw, cotton stalks, rice straw, sugarcane trash and wheat straw co-digested with buffalo dung was evaluated through AMPTS (Automatic Methane Potential Test System). The substrates were analyzed for moisture, TS (Total Solids) and VS (Volatile Solids), ultimate analysis (CHONS), pH and TA (To...
متن کاملEffect of particle size, moisture content, and supplements on selective pretreatment of cotton stalks by Daedalea flavida and enzymatic saccharification
A large amount of cotton stalk waste biomass with high cellulose content are incinerated by the farmers causing air pollution. The high cellulose content of cotton stalks can be converted to fermentable sugars by fungal delignification pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass and enzymatic saccharification. The effect of particle size, moisture content, and media supplements was studied for deli...
متن کاملEffect of mowing cotton stalks and preventing plant re-growth on post-harvest reproduction of Meloidogyne incognita.
The southern root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) is a major parasite of cotton in the U.S., and management tactics for this nematode attempt to minimize population levels. We compared three post-harvest practices for their ability to reduce nematode population levels in the field, thereby reducing initial nematode population for the next year's crop. The three practices tested were: 1) c...
متن کاملTillage effects on energy use and greenhouse gas emission in wheat-cotton rotation
Crop production process utilizes input energy and produces some biomass energy as output. During this process, greenhouse gases (GHGs) are also emitted which can make environmental risks. In this study, input and output energies, energy indices, and GHG emissions arising from inputs were estimated for wheat-cotton rotation under different tillage practices in Fars province. The study was condu...
متن کاملValorization of Agricultural Residues by Fractionation of their Components
The combined production of the most abundant agricultural residues in Spain (viz. cereal straw, sunflower stalks, vine shoots, cotton stalks, olive, orange and peach tree prunings, and horticultural and related residues) amounts to over 50 million tons per year, more than 20% of which is generated by Andalusia alone. Agricultural residues must be disposed of for various reasons including the fa...
